why that change in system requirements (RAM)

Hi all, Shy

my PC is a Lenovo-H520e, offering me 4 GB of RAM.

I´ve been happily using Linux Lite 6.2 on it for quite a while and I´m very satisfied with it.
Seems I will be able to use this version until April 2027. After that point in time there won´t be any security updates any longer and I will need to do a fresh install.

Now I found out the following:

Until (and including) 7.0 it says:

Code:
Minimum Recommended Specs:  768mb ram
Preferred Specs:   1024mb ram+

That was pretty good. Good enough for me. But the specs suddently changed dramatically.
From 7.2 onwards it says:

Code:
Minimum Recommended Specs:  2GB ram
Preferred Specs:         4GB ram+

Why that drastic change?  Cry

For 7.6 "Minimum Specs" were dropped entirely. Just " Recommended Computer Specs: 4GB RAM"

Until now I can run waterfox browser, sylpheed, thunar and even a virtual machine (1 GB of virtual RAM assigned to it) at the same time without any hiccups.
Meaning the rest of my system getting along just fine with 3 GB of physical RAM during runtime of the VM.

Seems I won´t be able to do things like that anymore with the latest version of Linux Lite.

Such a shame.

Many greetings from Rosika  Shy

Software evolves. More features, bug fixes etc etc There are many reasons. There is also the odd application that shrinks, some of the new software I've been working on has halved in size. I looked at the driver page for your PC, there are still drivers for XP which means you've had very good run to date.
Linux Lite will continue to be of use for you well into the next Series so don't worry.

Hi Jerry,  Smile

thank you very much for your reply.

O.K., I understand that solftware evolves and that some of it may need more RAM than they used to.
It´s just that I was pretty astonished to see a substantial increase from 1024mb to 4GB RAM (for "recommended").
Oh well...

Thanks for the reassurance.

Just for your or anyone´s information:

Presently (6.2) I got these measurements right after boot and login with nothing started except the terminal to issue the command `free`.

Code:
free
total        used        free      shared  buff/cache  available
Mem:        3922256      747452    1929480      92284    1245324    2854156
Swap:        1961124          0    1961124

and:

Code:
free -m
total        used        free      shared  buff/cache  available
Mem:            3830        799        1813          83        1216        2724
Swap:          1915          0        1915

So I might use a live session of the latest version of Linux Lite and look at the results of the free command there.
Perhaps there's still something in it for me after all.

Thanks a lot for your help.  Heart

Many greetings from Rosika  Smile
